"Goodbye to Beaver"

We received horrible news in July of 2003 regarding our beloved stallion, Kings Hay Day aka "Beaver." What had been previously diagnoses as an abcessed tooth was found to be cancer. With no medical options, we brought Beaver home to the farm where he was laid to rest on October 31, 2003. We buried him at the gate of the pasture the mares are in, so he could overlook his herd for eternity.

I have spent a lot of time thinking about my history with Beaver since his diagnosis. Our history together started back in 1984 when I was 10 years old and he a yearling. He finally came home to me as a two year old, and he remained my best friend for many years. As only God can do, when he takes one thing away, he gives you something in return.

My gift came in the form of a bay roan filly sired by Beaver this spring. Although his impending death led us to a dispersal of most of our herd, that bay roan filly is still in the barn. Year after year, he gave us outstanding foals with unbelievable minds. I cannot count the number of times that I have heard from the owners of his foals, that when it came time to break them to ride, they just threw a leg over their back and rode off. His foals were not only good looking, but had unbelievable natural cow ability and they can be found working on the ranches all across the midwest.

2004 will mark the last foal crop for Kings Hay Day, unfortunately, due to his illness he only settled a few mares, but you can be sure that those 2004 foals will be as grand as the foals from past years. These foals will remain at Salt Creek quarter Horses and will carry on the legacy founded by their sire.

Rest in Peace, old friend...
you are greatly missed!
